Woke up to more snow...not much but enough to cover the dirty snow and freshen up the landscape!

Our 8-year old son was asking tonight why we were not sugaring, yet. That made me smile! I explained that this is just the January Thaw.  And, then I asked him the BIG question.  "Are you ready to go up to the woods and check lines?" To which he responded, "well, I am ready to bring in the buckets at the house and sample the syrup!"

Future sugar maker?  Maybe. Definitely a lifelong maple syrup lover.

Temperatures in the 40s and near 50! The recent warming trend in January each year is now known as the January Thaw. And, we are in the midst of it now.

As sugarmakers, it is a tease for the coming season. And anxiety-producing, as we realize just how much is left to do before the true season begins. Lines to check, taps to change out, tanks to prepare, and making sure all of our equipment is in order.

The days are still short and there are not many daylight hours.  Sugaring fever is rising. Before long we will be running on adrenaline and very little sleep. But the sugarhouse will be filled with the sweet smell of fresh maple syrup, and our friends and family will show up to sample this year's crop.
